Why PSG and Istabul Basaksehir players are icons for their UEFA Group H final match
As a football fan from the black community, I feel so sad that people in this day and age continue with racism. In this time of the Coronavirus Pandemic, where black, white or yellow have been equally affected. Instead of uniting, it so hurting to see others destroying the game that brings the whole world together to a standstill. I am happy for PSG and Istanbul players uniting, and walking away from the game to show solidarity in condemning racism in the football fields.
Tottenham Head Coach Jose Morinho stated that players from both teams did an iconic gesture that would be remembered in history for standing against racism, 15 minutes after the game had started. He continued to state that he was sorry and saddened by the situation and hopes the iconic match will act as an example to deter such incidents in future.
PSG thrashes Istanbul Basaksehir 5-1 to top Group H
A day after the match was abandoned because the racist remarks, the players returned to the field rejuvenated for an exiting game. Neymar score a hatrick for PSG with Mbappe scoring his first within an year in the competition. Although PSG had already qualified after Manchester United suffered a 3-2 disappointing defeat at the hands of RB Leipzig, their goal difference and better head-to-head match with the German side put them at the top of the group.
Closing remarks
I urge all those participating in any football match to take caution of their actions, respect each other, and treat each other like brothers. Football is the most watched sport in the world; therefore, they should be at the forefront in setting an example for all the right reason and preventing the shameful and bad situations. PSG and Istanbul Basaksehir players are now icons for walking away in protest against racism.
